Job Title:             Wide Load Escort 
Department:      Shop
Exempt Status: Hourly (non-exempt)

Position Objective/Description:
The Wide Load Escort is responsible for safely guiding oversized and overweight loads to and from job sites, ensuring compliance with state regulations, traffic laws, and company safety standards. This role helps protect the public, prevent property damage, and support drivers transporting heavy or wide equipment and materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Escort oversized loads according to state-required routing and permitting guidelines.

• Maintain constant communication with the truck driver, dispatch, and other escorts.

• Monitor traffic, road hazards, clearances, bridges, and overhead obstructions.

• Assist the heavy haul driver with navigation, lane changes, turns, and safe passage.

• Use required safety equipment such as flags, signs, lights, and radios.

• Review permits and ensure the load complies with all regulations.

• Communicate clearly using CB radio or other company-approved communication devices.

• Provide direction to motorists when necessary to maintain safe operation around the load.

• Document any incidents, delays, hazards, or violations.

• Perform routine vehicle inspections on the escort vehicle before and after trips.

• Follow all JDC safety policies, PPE requirements, and company procedures at all times.

• Represent JDC professionally while interacting with the public and external agencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

• State certification for escorting oversized loads (if required by the state).

• Knowledge of state and federal regulations for wide/oversized load movement.

• Ability to read permits, maps, and route instructions.

• Strong communication skills and situational awareness.

• Must be able to work variable hours, including early mornings or evenings depending on haul schedules.

• Able to stand, walk, and remain alert for extended periods.

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to sit, stand, and drive for long periods.

• Must be able to lift up to 25 or more lbs.

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• Visual and hearing ability sufficient to safely monitor traffic and communicate.

Education / Experience:

• No prior experience or training.
• Less than high school education; or up to one-month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Valid Class E driver’s license

Work Environment:

• Frequent travel to job sites and public roadways.

• Exposure to varying weather, traffic conditions, and noise levels.

• Requires constant alertness and adherence to safety practices.
