Job Description

St. Bernadette Catholic Church, a parish in Hollywood, Florida, is hiring for a Music Minister to start immediately. The Part-time Music Minister for Saint Bernadette Catholic Parish Church will develop and sustain a prayerful, singing assembly at the weekend Masses assigned and other holy days and in so doing, help to increase regular attendance as well as participation. This person shares the Catholic faith, reports to the pastor, and can deepen liturgical understanding through music and sung prayer. The Part-time Music Minister performs all duties and responsibilities in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami. Hours: 15-18 hours weekly, including masses on Saturday at 4:00 p.m., and Sunday 8:00, 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 and 6:00 p.m. Essential Functions include:

  1. Performs at all Vigil and Sunday liturgies as Accompanist (on organ and/or piano) as well as sings and conducts the respective choir.
  2. Performs at two celebrations of the Sacrament of Reconciliation; one First Holy Communion; one Confirmation; holy days of obligation; the Easter Triduum and Christmas.
  3. Selects music for all weekend Masses assigned, according to the parish and in accordance with its spiritual needs, using appropriate musical, pastoral and liturgical judgment.
  4. Selects music for other special celebrations and events.
  5. Responsible for all music associated with the liturgy including choir direction as either Accompanist, Cantor and/or Choir Director.
  6. Liturgical preparation through music selection
  7. Organizes weekly programs and rehearsals for parish Choir.
  8. Provides the written lyrics for upcoming Masses and liturgies so they can be included in the weekend programs.
  9. Provides copies of music scores to choir members.
  10. Maintains choir members updated with weekly emails containing programs for weekend liturgies, as well as music scores in PDF format and/or audio recordings in MP3 format.
  11. Attends monthly planning meeting to assist in music selection and planning for upcoming liturgies and specials masses, holidays, etc.
  12. Consults, advises and supports Pastor on music related issues, problems, concerns etc. when required or necessary.
  13. Attends to the musical and spiritual growth of parish music volunteers.
  14. Provides appropriate training for volunteers.
  15. Attends parish meetings which concern the music ministry.
  16. Coordinates care of music equipment if/when necessary.
  17. Presents a professional demeanor in mannerisms and attire.
  18. Supports parish life by attendance at parish functions.
  19. Responsible for continuous learning and development of knowledge and skill base in the areas of liturgy, music, pastoral ministry, and organization.
  20. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Music or related preparation.
  • Has acquired a thorough understanding of applied music, music theory and the history of music, most often achieved through an undergraduate degree in music.
  • Must be a Roman Catholic in good standing with considerable knowledge and familiarity of the Roman Catholic liturgy.
  • Previous employment or service as full- or part-time church musician, with voice/choral performance experience.
  • Knowledge of keyboard technique, liturgical service-playing techniques, group vocal techniques and choral conducting.
  • Some understanding of acoustics, especially pertaining to the parish worship space.
  • Basic knowledge of theory and harmony.
  • Awareness of the vast repertoire of music available today, both contemporary and treasured, sacred pieces.
  • The ability to interact and maintain a positive working relationship with parishioners, parish staff and other musicians.
  • The ability to handle difficult people and stressful situations in a calm, respectful manner.
  • The ability to engage the parish in the musical celebration of faith through worship and empower people to sing.
  • The ability to actively recruit and retain singers and musicians.
  • Sensitivity to the ethnic composition of the parish and its musical needs.
  • Good oral and written English-language communication skills, including clear speaking voice.
  • Good Spanish-language spoken communication skills strongly preferred
  • Computer experience with music processing, proficiency in MS Outlook, and basic word processing skills in MS Word.
  • Presentation skills required, including MS PowerPoint software.
  • Must be able to stand, if necessary, for extended periods of time while directing or training.
