JOB PURPOSE

The Health Insurance Underwriter works independently with various departments including Business Development and Finance to prepare proposals as well as complex and customized quotes for new and renewing group and short term limited duration insurance plans in accordance with Executive Management expectations and Company strategy.

Requirements:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

• Uses rate models to prepare proposal requests based on the medical risks presented and claims experience
• Works in collaboration with Business Development and Management to determine whether to accept or decline risks in accordance with Company guidelines
• Manages an assigned portfolio of risk and achieves profitability targets for the business measured by loss ratio
• Works closely with account executives, analytics, and utilization management nurses to gather necessary information for quotes to generate product-specific proposals
• Works with Management to establish underwriting policies and guidelines
• Uses underwriting judgement to determine when deviations may be necessary from established guidelines and informs management of these nuances so that further refinement can be made to policies
• Responds to questions from account executives and brokers about quotes and benefits
• Maintains regular and predictable attendance
• Consistently demonstrates compliance with HIPAA regulations, professional conduct, and ethical practice
• Works to encourage and promote Company culture throughout the organization
• Other duties as may be assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent required in Business, Finance, Risk Management, Economics, or Mathematics required
• 2+years health insurance or underwriting experience preferred
• Intermediate knowledge level of Excel, SQL and PowerPoint
• Ability to learn quickly and be self-motivated

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Moderate to significant amount of stress in meeting deadlines and dealing with day-to-day responsibilities. Must be able to drive a vehicle and daytime/overnight travel as required.
